Say this to your child first

Every one of these words describes something you can point at in the real world. Before the screen, go and find three of them — a shadow on the wall, a leaf, something that floats in a bowl of water. The word sticks to the object.

Watch out for

Reciting a definition they do not picture. Ask "show me one" — if they cannot, the word has not landed yet.

Science words — say what it means

Say this to your child first

The same words turned around: they get the meaning and have to produce the word. Go and find an example of each outside afterwards if you can.

Watch out for

Silence rather than a guess. Tell them a wrong guess is more useful than no guess, and mean it.

Alive or not alive?

Say this to your child first

The test is whether it grows, needs food or water, and makes more of itself. Ask 'does it grow?' about each one. A car moves but does not grow — that is the distinction worth landing.

Watch out for

Thinking anything that moves is alive. Cars, rivers and clouds all move. Growing is the better test.

The weather and the seasons

Look out of the window and name today's weather before you start. Connecting the words to what they can actually see is the whole point.

Watch out for

Confusing the season with the month. Start with what the weather is doing rather than what the calendar says.
