They get the description and produce the word. Point out the real thing next time you drive past it — the fire station, the library, the post office.

Watch out for

Naming a specific place instead of the general word. 'Our library' is right in spirit; nudge them to the plain word.

These are the people a child may one day need to find in an emergency. Say each job out loud and ask where they have seen that person.

Only knowing them from television. Point out the real ones when you are out and about.

Things I should know by heart

Practise these until they are automatic. A child who can say their full name and their grown-up's phone number can be reunited with you if they are ever lost. Do this one often.

Watch out for

Reciting it only when calm. Practise it in a busy shop too — that is when they will actually need it.
